  • Daughter's friend kicked out

My daughter's friend was kicked out of her house last week and has been staying with us. Her step mother messaged me today and stated they want her to become emancipated. She is unable to financially support herself so I feel as though that is not a viable option. CINA is also not an option as it doesn't appear her situation fits. What options do we have? We can't get her medical card or any of her information from her dad and stepmom so I can't even have her seen by a doctor if needed. I am going to call DHS on Monday and have already contacted the school to let them know the situation. I want custody of this child so she can have a stable home and I can make decisions about her. How can I do this?

Thanks for reaching out us here at NRS. We know that you are doing your best and applaud you for helping a youth in need. From what we gather about your story there seems to be some give in the youth’s step mother as to giving the youth freedom and possibly helping her with emancipation. However you said emancipation is not a viable option. If you wish to obtain custody you can call the police or even CPS and let them know that it is your wish to take custody of the youth. You might want to speak with the youth’s guardians and makes sure they’d be okay with signing off custody. If they are willing the process can become easy because the parents are consenting. This would in turn help the youth get their meds and other things they might need. If you would like to talk more in detail and share more about how we can help specifically, please call or chat soon.
