17 & 1/2, Legal Consequences in Tennesse?

I'm a 17 and a half y.o. female living in Memphis Tennessee. My father, in particular, is very conservative and religious and disagree with my mother's choices of putting me and my younger sister in public school. There, I met my s/o of almost a year. My father has told me that he wishes to kick me out, and is very verbally emotionally abusive, and doesn't wish to support my choices for education and other topics. The disagreements with me have gotten so out of control that he made haphazard comments (possibly on accident) to disown me. I was wondering if there would be any legal consequences of me leaving home because my mother has mentioned she will call the cops if I ever try to take off.

Thank you for reaching out. It sounds like you’re in a really frustrating situation. We’re sorry to hear how your father has been treating you; you definitely deserve to be supported. You don’t deserve to be abused in any way—no one does. As far as leaving home, we can give some general information though we are by no means legal experts. In Tennessee, the age of majority is 18. Since you are still a minor, your mom would have the right to call the police and file a runaway report if you left without permission. From there, if the police are able to find you they may return you home. Beyond that, there aren’t usually any legal consequences as running away is not a crime.
