Hello, as is said in the title, I turn 18 in 30 days, and I'd like to move out before then. Problem is, my mother is doing everything she can to cut me off from the outside world, besides stopping me from going to work. I do not attend school currently. I know you cannot give state/area specific information. But I would just like to know exactly what I should be taking into consideration, what my parents could do to get me home, and an estimation of the lengths the police would go to in order to get me home. (Given the fact that I'm turning 18 in 30 days) I've given this much thought. And things have only recently gotten to a point where I feel the need to leave early. I have carefully planned everything for after I've turned 18, and would only be accelerating those plans by 30 days. Any information is helpful, thank you.

Hi, thank you so much for reaching out. The way your mother is isolating you is not ok and its understandable that you would want to run away. We aren't legal experts, but generally if you do leave before you are legally an adult, then your parents would have the right to file a runaway report with the police. You aren't doing anything illegal, but it is a status offense and if you were found before turning 18 you would be returned to your parents' care. However, the police may not take a report for someone so close to turning 18. The best way to know how that would work, you can reach out to your local police non emergency line. We can help you find that number and even call out to the police for you if you reach out to us over call or chat.
If you do run away, you will be responsible for supporting yourself. Some things to consider would be where you'd be staying, how you will afford food, clothes, etc. We are always available to talk through this with you at 1800RUNAWAY and can look up shelter and food resources for you, among other things. Thank you so much for reaching out and feel free to do so again at any time.
NRSPlease remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.
