    Hey there

Thanks for reaching out to us at the National Runaway Safeline (NRS), we are sorry to hear about what you are currently experiencing. What it sounds like your grandma and mother are saying and doing to you does not sound like a good place for you to be living. You deserve to live in a home that makes you feel safe and secure and a good place to grow as an individual. If you ever feel like you want to speak with someone about what is going on at home, please reach out to that National Child Abuse Hotline at 1-800-422-4453 or through their website www.childhelp.org. Also, please do not hesitate to let us or the proper authorities (police, child protective services, department of child and family services) about any abuse that you are receiving at home so that a child abuse report can be filed. We are mandatory reporters at NRS, so if you do speak to us about any abuse you are receiving at home and provide your name and date of birth, we are required to file a child abuse report.

We don’t like to give people direct advice on what to do. We only like to explore options for the youth and hopefully give them the information that allows them to make the best decision. Only you can determine what is best for you. It’s good to hear that you are thinking about your best interests and wish to stay in the same school. You could always explore this option with your aunt. If you aunt is open and willing to allow you to live with her, and you trust your aunt, that may be in your best interest. If you haven’t already, having a conversation with her about what is going on with your grandma and mom may help you in your situation. Whether it be opening the dialogue up between your aunt and grandma/mom about moving in with her (or finding an alternate living arrangement) or even just talking about the issues at home, letting other people know about your situation can be helpful. Whether it be close friends, family, teachers, or counselors, letting people know that your home life is not working for you can be beneficial.

We hope this information has been helpful to you in this difficult time. If you ever have any questions or just need someone to talk to, please feel free to call us at 1-800-RUNAWAY (1-800-786-2929) or chat with us online at https://www.1800runaway.org/. We wish you the best of luck and let us know if you need anything further.

14 and I want to leave

Help. I'm a 14 year old trans male who doesn't feel I can live in my home anymore. My grandma is constantly yelling at me for doing one little thing wrong, like accidentally missing a small spot when i vacuum. She is always telling me how useless, Idiotic, fat, ugly, worthless, a waste of oxygen, a mistake, and many more not nice things. My mom threatened shes going to pack up all my stuff into garbage bags tomorrow and throw it all away. I dont want to give in and let her do it. I feel so stressed and I feel unsafe as my grandma has thrown knives at my hands before, (I was washing dishes in the sink and she aggressively threw multiple knives into the sink without warning, and when I asked her why she did that, she said "Idk") I want to leave and go to my aunts house, move in with her. Its only 5 or 10 minutes away (by car) so I'd still be in the same school. What should I do?
