  • A girl from UAE

    Hello,

I'm a 28 year old girl from UAE. I'm still living with my family since it's illegal for girls to move out without their guardian's consent or have your own independence unless you get married.
I've been abused physically, sexually and emotionally at this house hold by family members and at 28 it's still going on to a certain level.
I've been held hostage at the house for around a month and half now and I'm not allowed to have anyone visit me or leave the house.
The reason my family are holding me hostage is because they found out I've been visiting a psychiatrist and underwent medical treatment as a result of going through sever depression. I tried to commit suicide twice this year and at this point I am losing every hope I have.
My basic inquiry is if I ran away and fled the country by law can they track me down and return me home? What rights do I have?
Women in the middle east are treated as second class citizens and still are under the guardianship system. I can't go into much details because it'll take a while for me to explain my situation. I just want a chance in life and I know I'd be much content leaving the house and live in a safer environment. Is there anything I could do?
Please bear in mind women don't have much rights here as the country claims, if I contact the authorities or try to hire lawyer I'd be subjected to much more than I already am. No law will fully protect me specially that I come from a well know family who can easily get out of any trouble.
    I'm open for any suggestion/advice.

    re: A girl from UAE

    Hi there,

It sounds like you truly have been going through a lot with your family at home right now. You mentioned that you have experienced a number of different forms of abuse and have been depressed for quite some time. It takes a lot to reach out for help, and you are very brave to be able to reach out to us. From what you shared, it seems like you would have a hard time getting anyone to help in your country because of the laws against women. Since our services are usually based in the U.S., it's hard for us to say what the authorities in your country would do if you fled the country. We don't really know what would happen if you left. Your rights here would depend on where you are living. Also, our services are usually youth focused so with you being 28 and coming from another country it may be difficult for us to identify what could happen for sure. We do wish we could be of more service to you, but we aren't exactly legal experts here. If you do find yourself in the U.S. you could try calling any local agencies, like 211 for assistance in the area. There is a website, www.211.org that can track down a hotline if you find yourself in a place with nowhere to go. In your country, with what you shared, you could see if there are any hotlines at all that offer support for women in similar situations. Hopefully some of this was helpful to let you know what we offer and what your rights are.

We do wish you the very best of luck,
    NRS

I am experiencing the same thing I actually

might turn suicidal if i stay I can’t explain everything but running away is my best option right now, i am 16 and a girl i live in the United arab emirates , girls here are treated like objects like things to sell and buy we have no privilege at all our life’s are owned by our parents or husbands if we ever get married we have no choices in life what’s so ever and a lot of more thing’s that I don’t want to get into, I’m willing to runaway out of the country as soon as possible, considering this COVID-19 that’s going on i know it will be much harder to settle in and have a life but its okay with me i know it will be better that being controlled and abused, i am not allowed to go anywhere but school or dentist appointments , but right now school is online and I don’t think i can get out of the house for much before they notice i am gone, i have talked to my friend and she thinks that me running away at 18 is better cause i will have more privilege and I don’t need my parents to sign on anything and I don’t need there permission but at the same time i am thinking of getting fostered, i want a foster family so i can feel safe and settled and not alone in this new country, so i feel like i have somewhere to go back to, i want to know how can i be an option for foster families, for families who are looking for a child to foster in there home i want to be an option,

but of course there is the other scenario of me running away after 18

i need to know which one is better me running away right now at the age of 16 or 18 when i don’t need the permission on my parents

cause I really really want and need a new family that actually will love me and look after me, i have a-lot of mental health crisis of me feeling like i have no family or someone to come back to when i need support and I really need that, i need to feel like I belong somewhere like i have a home at heart.

at the moment my money is not enough but if I actually find a family that is willing to foster me i will save money and see how i can buy a ticket i will do everything i can just to get out of here please give me you’re best advice.

i tried calling you but it won’t ring this number is not available in my country, but if it’s possible i would really appreciate talking on zoom or any internet based platform to help me plan my runaway

i am in a really dark place right now but im still surviving and trying my very best to do what’s best for me.

to the person who asked abt running away at 16 or 18.. i’m almost 19 now and i’ve been planning a runaway plan ever since i’m 13.. i really wish i can get you out of the situation but sadly 21 is the safest... what you can do to kinda leave the house is to go to a university that offers accommodation and live there. i wanted to go to nyu but unfortunately the abuse that happened on my last two years of highschool was so bad it took over my grades and i dropped to an average student, which turned my plan to leave at 18 go to a plan to leave at 21 or even 23 when i finish uni and get my own job. ik it’s super complicated but if u runaway now they will just drag you back and i’m worried that the abuse might get worse, it’s safer to wait for the perfect moment

It is important you know that you do not ever deserve to be abused. You should get to be in a place where you are free from the threat of violence and abuse. The National Runaway Safeline is located in the United States of America (USA), so unfortunately our knowledge about running away and abuse reporting is limited to the law and resources of that country. Hi i am 12 i am not a girl but a boy, but dont worry my parents are super strict so I know whats wrong and right I'm not that childish I'm serious since the pandemic came a lot of school's
get into a virtual classes with via zoom or any internet platforms, And since that I missed a lot and school is so hard for me.. and my teachers keep sending assignments that I haven't done ( its a struggle for me because they post a lot of assignments ) and so I try to do them but most of the time they keep emailing my mom because of the assignments and absents I did and whenever I say the truth like even though, she still wouldn't believe me and just yell at me with random things like throwing me out in my country home by myself age of 12 or she doesn't care about me even if I died or runaway and It really hurts me and while that she slaps me with anything that she sees mostly on my face and any parts of my body which really hurts, I tried my best accomplishing all my assignments but new ones keep being added and I cant keep up! its so complicated and I'm stuck here being treated like someone whos like a ghost that everybody doesn't care! even 2 of my siblings kept telling me i was wrong and kept believing my mom, I am the middle child btw if you are wondering. please help and I am trying to find a runaway!
                ---
Hello! thank you so much for replying, one last thing though. can you give me an advice if I runaway? and should I runaway in this age? or plan a little bit more?

and also one last question is there a way where I can be adopted somewhere in Uae Dubai? a new family would be so helpful
                ---
Is there a place where I can be adopted? near my location. ( united arab emirates, dubai ) a new family would really help.

Hey there! Thanks for reaching out to us here at the National Runaway Safeline. We know that it can take a lot of courage to reach out for support, and we're glad you made that decision.

Running away is a big step, and one that you definitely spend some time thinking through before making. Having a plan is generally a good idea, and knowing where you'll go, how you'll get there, and what you'll do to survive once you're there are important things to consider. Unfortunately, we don't have a working knowledge of how things work in your area because the National Runaway Safeline is based in the US. If you think talking to someone else about what's going on would be helpful, you can try to connect with a local org that might be able to help by visiting: https://www.childhelplineinternation...pline-network/

                  Take care!
