  • Quick Question About a 17 Year Old

So my friend is 17 years old in Ohio and has runaway from home, now being considered a runaway. When I last talked to her earlier in the day she said she was fine and was glad to be away from the home. She said that her legal guardian neglects her and her brother (they don't have beds but the guardian does), forced her to lose her job, isolates them from their family, and when she was working stole her money. CPS had been called once and they didn't do much of anything, not even an actual investigation. Is there something that she can do so that she can actually feel safe somewhere besides wherever she's at? And will the person they are with going to get in trouble if the police does find her?

    Hi,

Thanks for contacting us. It sounds like your friend is going through a difficult time.

It sounds like you're looking for shelter for your friend and you want to understand what will happen if your friend stays with another friend.

As for shelters, the easiest way to find a shelter would be to call us at 1-800-RUNAWAY so that we can look for a shelter in your hometown. We're open 24x7. Alternatively, you can try looking on homelessshelterdirectory.org, but many of those shelters are for adults.

And, if your friend decides to stay with another adult, the other adult could get in trouble with the police. Many states have a law against "harboring a runaway". This means that while running away itself is not illegal, letting a runaway stay in your home is illegal. However, we can't say whether the police would actually charge the adult with the crime because it can depend on the situation.

Again, feel free to give us a call and best of luck.
Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.
