  • 16 and wanting to move out

hello, I'm 16 and having trouble getting along with my mum since my dad passed away at 11,it's never been really bad until se began calling me a dead ******** a disappointment ect, recently I've been dating a boy and he turns 18 soon,he has his own house and has two jobs. I really want to move out,I've read on the internet that you can move out at my age if you show you are mature enough, and have food shelter medical needs, stuff like that. but is it true?.

re: 16 and wanting to move out

    Hi there,

Thanks for reaching out today and sharing your story with us. It sounds like you’re dealing with so much with your mom right now. It can’t be easy to be called those names all the time. You don’t deserve to be treated that way at all. It makes sense that you’re thinking about leaving and it’s smart to ask your questions. So let’s see how we can help you out.

We aren’t legal experts, but we are able to speak generally about your questions based on information we have about the laws in the United States. If you are under 18, and decide to leave home without your mom’s permission, then your mom can file a runaway report with the police and have you brought back home. Now, in many states if you can show to the courts that you are independent of your mom (meaning you can pay for rent/bills, that you are able to care for yourself), then you can be granted emancipation. Emancipation means that you are legally responsible for yourself. If you want to look into emancipation, then the first step would be to contact a lawyer.

If you have more questions or want to talk through anything else, please call or chat with us. You can call us at 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or chat with us through our website (www.1800runaway.org) from 4.30pm-11.30pm central time.

We look forward to your call or chat.

    Best of luck to you,

    NRS
