Can a parent be in trouble for not taking child to a psychiatrist, psychologist, or giving them their prescribed medications? Child is 17 and has been on medications for many years. Mother says she is done spending any more money on the child. They live in Illinois in Kane County

    Hi there,

Thanks for reaching out to NRS via our forum!

If a parent is not getting their child medical attention that can be considered neglect. Mental health is considered the same as any other physical health issue, so the mother should be getting the youth the medication they need. Child Help (National Child Abuse Hotline) is confidential and may be a good place to find options for the youth, they also can report child abuse if the youth wants to go with that option. Their phone number is (800) 422-4453 and their website is childhelp.org

    Best, NRS
