  • Almost 16, want to run away, transphobic family

Hi there, I'm a 15 year old transgender boy. (I will be 16 in like two weeks I believe.) My family is emotionally abusive and doesn't support my transition or my status as trans at all, I tried to come out, and I was met with horrible responses from them, which shamed me back into the closet, and I am miserable.

I don't feel like I can live here another two years, I don't think I will survive. My boyfriend, who lives in Nevada, offered for me to live with him, and his mother offered too. My family will not willingly let me leave. Is it possible to try to live with them at some point? Would my family be able to find me somehow?

Thanks for reaching out to us for help. It sounds like you are in a very difficult position. We are sorry to hear about your family being emotionally abusive and transphobic. You deserve to be treated with respect, and transitioning without support sounds incredibly difficult. It is understandable that you would feel like leaving. We are here to listen and support you in any way that we can. Here are a few resources that might be helpful:
The Trans Lifeline: 1-877-565-8860 or is a crisis hotline for trans folks where everyone who answers the phones is trans.
The Trevor Project: 1-866-488-7386 or is a crisis and suicide hotline for LGBTQ youth
It sounds like you are thinking about running away to live with your boyfriend in Nevada. If you leave, your family can call the police and file a runaway report. Law enforcement might search for you and force you to return home. It sounds like you want to leave, but you aren’t sure what could happen and you don’t have much of a plan. We are here to help you talk through your options and find resources that could help you. It takes so much bravery to reach out for help. We are here to listen. Please do not hesitate to call us at any time. We are looking forward to hearing from you soon, and wish you the best of luck.
Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.
