  • How does it works?

I’m 17 but I live with my boyfriend and my mom.. my parents want to make him pay for everything I need such as medical insurance, gas, prom dress, food etc. My question is, is it true that since he’s living with me even if I’m under age my parents shouldn’t take care of me or any of my expenses? Let’s say that if we go to court and they allege that they won’t pay for any of my stuff anymore because I live with my boyfriend and he should take care of me? Are they right? Or it doesn’t matter and thy should take care of me until I’m 18?

    Hi there,

Thank you for reaching out to us at the National Runaway Safeline. We are here 24/7 to listen and to support.

We are not legal experts but we could speak generally. Generally speaking your parents are still responsible for your needs until you are a legal adult at 18. It could be considered neglect the things you described and could be reportable. If you reach out to Child Help you could ask questions about reporting child abuse and neglect, or just more questions about what your rights are within your situation. They can be reached at 1-800-422-4453. We can also be reached 24/7 at 1-800-786-2929. We could help walk you through this option and also possibly provide you with other resources like legal aid. Don't hesitate to give us or Child Help a call.

Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.
