re: 17 year old runaway right in Wyoming
Thanks so much for writing us! We are not legal experts. We do know that the age of majority in Wyoming is 18. This means that 17 year olds are still minors. If a 17 year old runs, his/her parents or guardians have the right to file a runaway report. This report will put the youth’s information into a nationwide database. Additionally, those people who help runaways could be found guilty of harboring a runaway and may be subject to fines or more serious consequences. Your local police department’s nonemergency line could tell you the most about the extent to which police actually search for runaways who are 17. If you know someone who really wants to leave home, there are legal options that exist as well. These include emancipation, having your parents’ or guardians’ permission to grant temporary custody to another concerned adult, or having that concerned adult apply for guardianship by petitioning the court, not your parents. If you have questions of a legal nature, use these two websites to connect with the legal aid resource nearest you:
