  • 18 year old wanting to leave with a 16 year old because of personal issues

I'm currently 17 but me and my friends are planning on traveling and living off the grid. I'm waiting till I'm 18 so that it will be legal for me to get my license and drive, but the problem is, is that my friends are turning 18 till a couple of years and they want to leave in the next 7 months? Would that be counted as kidnapping? And if so, what if we don't get caught till they turn 18? Then will we still go to jail even tho they are 18 now?

RE: 18 year old wanting to leave with a 16 year old because of personal issues.

Thank you for reaching out to us today with such an important question. It seems you really care about your friends by reaching out to us and asking for help.

You bring up a great question about your friends not being 18 and wanting to bring them along on your travel plans to live off the grid. We are not legal experts and cannot say for sure what will happen. However, since you will be a legal adult and your friends will still be minors, taking them with you could be seen by the authorities as illegal. Living off the grid until your friends turn 18 seems like it would involve a lot of planning and comes with a high risk of running into authorities (police, social services, medical, etc). Have you thought out what living off the grid means for you and your friends in terms of where you would live, how you would get food, what would happen if someone gets sick, or you run out of provisions? These questions can help you see where you may interact with authorities. You also mention leaving because of personal issues. We can talk to you about possible resources alternatives and to running away. A trained liner can help you work out a great plan of action for you and your friend to safely work through what’s going on in your life currently.
Again we’re really glad you reached out to us. It takes a lot to ask for help and you are trying to figure out your options which is really good to see. You truly care about your friends and want the best for everyone involved. If you would like to talk further about your situation and talk through your living off the grid plan or another alternative, please do not hesitate to call or chat us. We’re here to listen, here to help.
