  • Need to get my siblings out of an unsafe situation

My parents are getting divorced and my siblings and I are currently staying with my mom, but the court wants to give unsupervised visitation to my dad who has physically and emotionally abused us in the past. He's hit my siblings multiple times and once pushed my half sister down the stairs, and he's talked before about how he could kill my mom and get away with it. I believe my siblings are honestly in danger if he has unsupervised access to them but no one believes that this actually happened, not even cps, and my mom doesn't have the money to fight it in court anymore. I feel like if he does it again the only way to keep them safe is to get them out of his reach but I'm worried about making things worse by causing legal trouble if I run away with them. Obviously I would try contacting the police but based on past evidence I don't think anyone would care. If it helps anything, I'm 16, almost 17, and my siblings are 11, 8, and 6.

    Hey there,

Thank you for contacting us at the National Runaway Safeline. It sounds like you and your siblings are going through a very stressful time right now at home. It takes a lot of courage to reach out for help and we are glad that you decided to reach out us.

We are sorry to hear that your dad physically hurt you and your siblings and threatened to hurt your mom. It is not ok. It can be hard to prove verbal and emotional abuse as you mentioned. If you could record any audio/video of these situations and take pictures of any physical abuse marks those could be helpful in proving the abuse. Child Help USA can help you provide more information about abuse report and how to file one. They can be contacted at 1-800-422-4453. If your life is danger or if your dad is in situation where he might hurt you or your siblings you can always call 911. If you call us at our 24 hour confidential hotline we would happy to look up any legal aid resources at no cost or at a low fee.
