i am 17 years old and my mom is (extremely!!) controlling and manipulative. I've been dealing with it all my life just on the hope of my 18th birthday. My 18th birthday is 10 months away and I've been having panic attacks lately because I get anxious when I'm being controlled. I have a job but my mom is constantly threatening me that she'll revoke my work permit and I need the money. I don't want to live here anymore I feel hopeless. I don't have any family that my mom would let me stay with (she's persistently making sure I never leave her house) I feel like such a burden and I have no one to talk to. I hate this feeling and it's getting hard to function. I've even considered suicide if I can't get out of here. I don't know how to handle this depression and anxiety because she refuses to take me to a counselor/therapist. I FEEL TRAPPED LIKE A PRISONER IN THIS HOUSE. don't know how much longer I can take it. RE: help urgent
Hello,
Thank you for reaching out to NRS to help with your situation. It does sound like you are trapped and NRS hopes to help you the best way possible. You mentioned that your mom said she would revoke your work permit; however, typically you do not need a work permit if you are older than 15 years old. Although we are not legal experts at NRS, work permits are usually for youth younger than 16. It also sounds very frustrating for you being almost 18 and unable to make your own decisions. You mentioned possibly wanting to go to counseling. At NRS we can provide you with counseling resources that may be able to help you free of charge. There are many programs such as group therapy or support help-lines that can assist with situations similar to yours. If you feel comfortable calling NRS, we are available 24/7 and are confidential. You can reach us at 1800-RUNAWAY.
Best,
NRSPlease remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.

help urgent part 2
I live in California and you need a work permit if you're still in high school (idk if it's just my county or what). Me going to counseling would only help some because honestly it's her that needs help. Also she's denying me some medical care. Do you know if it's legal for me to sign myself into hospitals or dentists? I'm waiting till I finish saving and get my car to maybe run away. I feel so helpless I don't know what to do

re: help urgent part 2
Hey again,
So, unfortunately we are not legal experts here or have much knowledge about being able to sign for yourself in doctor visits. Perhaps an option could be to reach out to your local clinic and ask some general questions about what it would look like in your area.
You mention that you want to runaway, we have listed some questions below that you can potentially brain storm before leaving:
Do I have a place to stay?
What about school? Would I continue to get an education?
Am I going to be gone awhile or coming back in a few days?
What would I do for money? Shelter? Food? Transportation?
Who can I depend on if I leave home?
Do I have a safe, solid plan?
What is my plan b in case my first plan doesn’t work?
What have I done to make things better at home?
What can I do to make things better at home?
Who have I reached out to make things better at home?
If you would want to talk further about your options or if you have any other general questions, please feel free to give us a call. We are here 24/7 and would love to talk to you more about what you have been going through. We wish you the best of luck in whatever it is you decide to do and hope to hear from you soon.
Stay strong,
