  • Running away in SC, help?

I'm planning on running away from South Carolina when I'm 17 in order to escape an abusive family. South Carolina law states that 17-year-old runaways cannot be returned home by force because they are considered adults by the criminal justice system; but does this still apply if I go to Illinois or Kansas? I'm planning on staying with my friends and their parents, and I want to know if I'll be able to remain in either of those places. Also, would I be able to file for emancipation to avoid legal trouble? Who could I contact?

    Hello,
If you have contacted NRS today through another means (for example, live chat, email or bulletin) for the same issue, it would be helpful to let us know that you have already contacted us. NRS understands it takes courage to reach out for help; therefore, we would like to minimize the need for you to repeat your situation and avoid offering you duplicate services.
    Best of luck,
    NRS
