  • I need to know what technically running away is

Hello Im 17 and I live in Florida. I have nointention of running away. My parents keep me locked up in the house all day long, and force me to stare at a wall. I recently left my house the other day for 30 hours. I left a note stating I was not running away and I was going to a friends were I would be safe. I told them in the note that I would return the next day. Well they called the police the next day right before I was about to return home. The cop brought me home, and my parents said if I ever leave the house without their consent they would call the police again and have me arrested this time. Like I said I have no intention what so ever to runaway. I just cant take being locked up all day and doing noithing but stare at a wall. I want to know if my parents could call the police if I left without their consent, but I tell them were I am going and be back in a couple hours or so. I just want to go out and hang out with my friends and have a normal summer.

Hello and thanks for reaching out on our bulletin boards,

We're sorry your parents keep you locked in the house all day. We imagine that feels pretty isolating and not how you'd like to spend your time. You mentioned you have no intention of running away and instead it seems like you're hoping for a little more independence this summer. Unfortunately it sounds like your parents are by the book and are they type of parents who call the police right away to file a runaway report. We aren't legal experts, but we can give you a general definition of running away. A run away is typically defined as a minor who leaves home without permission. Some police/sheriff will say the parent/guardian has to wait until curfew passes to make a runaway report, while others will take the report as soon as the minor leaves home.

If you want help contacting your local law enforcement to ask how soon they take runaway reports, we can help you do so if you want to give us a call at 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929.) Stay safe and best of luck!

What if I made my parents aware of where i am going and the time I will be back which would be before curfew. Could they still call the police and have me arrested.

Hello and thank you for reaching out to us again.

It is difficult to give a clear answer, but as we stated in a previous reply some police/sheriff will say the parent/guardian has to wait until curfew passes to make a runaway report, while others may take the report as soon as the minor leaves home. It may be best to reach out to local authorities in your area to learn more about how they handle a minor leaving home but not staying out past curfew hours. Again, if you needed any assistance contacting your local non-emergency police, please call our direct line at 1-800-786-2929 or reach out through live chat if you needed further services and assistance from us here at the National Runaway Safeline.

        Best,

        NRS
