Hi I am 17 (18 in less than two months) living in Houston, Texas; I currently have a job while attending high school, and I am living with my Grandmother. My Grandma doesn't have custody over me. Though I do live with my Grandma, my mom is still very controlling over the things I do. If I try to refuse to get into the car with her to school she threatens to call the cops. If I refuse to take a day off from work she threatens to get me terminated. Do I have to do what she says? Can she get me terminated? What rights to refusal do I have? Do I to go home with her?

RE: 17 in Texas, Working, 18 in two months. How much control does mother have?
Hi,
Thank you for reaching out to us. We’re sorry to hear that your mom is so threatening and controlling, it must be very difficult.
Whether or not your mom is able to get you fired from your job depends on your employer. If you’re concerned about it, you might want to broach the subject with your boss.
As far as living with your mom goes, it is unlikely that she will be able to have local police enforce your leaving your grandmother’s house and going to live with your mom since you are so close to 18. However, we aren’t legal experts and cannot guarantee this. We suggest that you reach out to your local police office through their non-emergency number and ask whether they would force you to go back to your mom’s.
