  • 1 month away from being 18, I need to get away from home and find somewhere to live.

I turn 18 in a month (end of october) but i need to find somewhere to live or someone to live with. Im afraid my Dad is going to kick me out when i turn 18, then i will be really screwed with no options. I called the cops on him a little more than a week ago because he attacked me and tried to strangle me, the cop came and told everyone to get along and left. Thats not the first time he has done something to me, but the first time i ever reported it. He has hit me and thrown me into walls and over furniture and thrown me onto the ground. Im afraid this may happen again, or worse. He goes out for dinner with my little brother sometimes and leaves me. He just went out today for an early dinner and haircuts (one class that i take part in is JROTC and we have to look professional so haircuts are important) and since i live in florida and didntnt have power for a week, the food in our refrigerator and freezer went bad, so theres next to nothing in there. I cant stay here anymore, i dont feel safe and he is systematically taking things away from me and trying to take away the things i love. This is my last year of highschool, and everyone knows about senior pictures. the most basic ones are less than 20 bucks, and he has told me tough luck. I hide what little money i have because i believe he will try to take that as well, and i cant use it for many things because i do not have a credit card. He doesnt care about my future, and has told me i can go ahead and leave (offering me the chance to be kicked out at 16&17 years old.) Im considering trying to find a way to locate someone who would "adopt" me... Someone please help me out, and im not asking for some asshole adult who is going to tell me suck it up.

Thank you so much for reaching out to us. It takes a lot of courage to ask for help in this way, and we’re so glad you have. We’re here to help in any way that we can. It is completely understandable why you don’t feel safe at home. It is not right for anyone to hit you, leave you without food, or steal your own money. You don’t deserve to be treated like this. You must be a truly strong person to have dealt with all of this, and it takes a lot of courage to call the police on your dad.

It sounds like the police didn’t handle that call as well as they could have. If physical abuse continues to happen and you want to make another report, you can take pictures of any bruises left behind to document it. Are there people that you can talk to about all of this to help you cope, such as a friend or a counselor at school?

As far as living with other people, you can reach out to friends and family (aunts, uncles, grandparents, or cousins) to see if anyone might take you in if you are kicked out. It sounds scary that you don’t have a steady supply of food right now, but you could try reaching out to friends and family again to see if anyone can offer you help. There is also the option of trying to find an after-school job to help you survive while you’re still at home. We can also help you look up a shelter option if that is something you are considering.

It sounds like you’re in a really difficult situation, and we are so glad you reached out to us. We are here to help, and we are available 24/7 at 1-800-RUNAWAY. You can also use chat or email to reach us.

Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.
