  • Abused runaway minor

I have a friend that's a few years younger then me and lives in an abusive family. They live in another state and I want to drive and pick them up to get them out of that house were they're being abused. I live with my parents and I'm almost 18 so when I turn 18 I want to get them. But they are a minor and they can't do anything about there situation on there own. I really want to help but idk if I'll get in trouble with the law or not. If anyone can provide any information my email is *******. I use this one as a substitute email I my official one but will. Check it in a few days as well as back here. Someone please help me. I want to get my friend out of that house so they stop getting hit and hurt.

Thank you for writing us at the National Runaway Safeline. We are here to listen and here to help. Sorry to hear that your friend is in an abusive family. It is good that you are support system for him/her/them.
As you may know, youth who runaway not only can get a runaway report filed by their parents, but they can also put those who help them at risk for charges of harboring a runaway. This means that if you were to help your minor friend, you and your family could be at risk for the consequences of harboring a runaway.

Since it is an abusive situation, you, your friend, or anyone you know can file an abuse report. This will alert the correct parties that your friend is not in a safe situation. You can also refer your friend to us and we can help them make the call. Abuse reports can be filed with the National Child Abuse Hotline: 1-800-422-4453. Also, if your friend feels too much in danger, please tell them to not hesitate with calling 911. You can also refer your friend to our hotline and we can see if we can help.

Please note that this is a general forum where you are not allowed to post personally identifying information. This is for your safety and privacy. To this end, we have removed the email address you provided.

    Best,

    NRS
