Hello, i am in Oklahoma and i have a few questions i was wondering if you could answer. I have been planning for a few months now on leaving with my son. I am in foster care but he is not. Though, he lives with me in a foster home. I am going out of state in a stable home and staying off the grid until i turn 18 next year. Will i be able to go to school? could i get a job? what would happen to my son if found before i hit 18? If you could please answer or direct me to some who could answer these questions that would be very appreciated. Thank you.

Re: 16 with a child and in foster care
Hi there,
Thanks for reaching out to us. It sounds like you’ve got a lot going on and are seriously considering leaving foster care with your son. You mentioned going out of state and trying to stay off the grid until you turn 18. At the same time, it sounds like you are wondering about going to school and/or getting a job. These are some great questions, but unfortunately it can be difficult to know exactly how everything will play out ahead of time.
Also, since we are not legal experts, we cannot say for sure whether your son would be removed from your care or not if you are discovered as a runaway with him in your custody. Running away itself is most often considered a status offense. However, harboring a runaway, crossing state lines with a minor, or even contributing to the delinquency of a minor are crimes adults may face if they are helping a runaway. We aren’t here to tell you what to do, but we do care about your safety as well as your son’s. We are here to talk more in detail about your plan should you choose to talk to us directly. Please feel free to Live Chat with us if you prefer online or call 1-800-RUNAWAY for immediate help. Good luck! Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.
