  • Im 17 and wanting to move out

I'm 17 and my living conditions aren't horrible but I have no freedom. My family emotionally abuses me and I'm basically in solitary confinement here. My boyfriend is aware of this and him and I have been trying to find a way to legally let me leave without consent. So far none of the options we have come across so far are do-able. My parents won't allow me to get emancipated.

I need some legal advice and help.

    Hello,

Thanks you for reaching out to us. It sounds like you are going through a difficult time at home. You don’t deserve to be emotionally abused or made to feel that you have no personal freedom. You have done a lot of advocating for yourself already by exploring different ways to leave home legally.

It seems that leaving home legally is your goal. However, just so you know, we can provide information about what might happen if you leave home without your parent’s consent at 17. Your parents may choose to file a runaway report in that case and the police would return you home if they found you. Depending on the police department, the officers may choose not to accept runaway reports for people who are 17. That is something you could call your local non-emergency police number to learn more about. We are also able to support you in making that call if you call our hotline number first.

Unfortunately we are not legal experts so we cannot provide legal advice. We can certainly provide you with referrals for legal resources in your area if you give us a call at 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or chat with us. As for emancipation, we are happy to talk more generally with you about that process in your state and provide local law offices that could talk with you more in depth about that as an option, too.

We hope this information was helpful for you. If you would like to talk more specifically about your situation or think through different options, please give us a call!

    Best of luck,

    NRS
Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.
