Hello I am 17 I have 8 months until I can legally leave. My mom is emotionally abusive and I have a bad feeling about my step dad around me. I am constantly in fight or flight mode because of my mom. She had doctors put me on medication when I was 7 that gave me depression and suicidal thoughts I had to stop in private because no one would listen. She constantly using my boundaries against me like they are a joke. She makes it worse than needed. She calls anything she can a “Psychotic Episode” even when she is continuing to tear me down peace by peace. She even provokes me to claim I have anger issues. Every time I get a little hope she snatches it away. She can’t take responsibility she always turns it around on me and brings something up that I was already punished for. I’ve gotten use to holding in my feelings and when I break it’s about anything and everything even after I explained that several times she is caught up on the one thing that pushed me over the edge. She doesn’t believe anything I say for no reason at all. There is so much to this that it could be 5,000 pages. I just want to know if there is anything I can do right now? I have been putting it off because I need a surgery and it’s really life or abuse right now.

Hi and thank you for reaching out to the National Runaway Safeline. We are sorry to hear that you are going through a difficult time at home with your mom. It must be very hard to feel unsupported. You don't deserve to be mistreated or your experience invalidated. One option that you might want to consider is reaching out to a school counselor for support if you have that available to you. Another option might to reach out to a trusted adult or even just a friend in your life for some support if there is someone you feel comfortable talking to. Sometimes just talking things through helps. Also, many people find that writing down their thoughts and feelings through journaling helps; or expressing yourself creatively through art, music, or whatever feels right to you. We would like to offer you some resources as well that you may find helpful. www.samhsa.gov offers mental health services and treatment information or you can call them at 1-800-662-4357. If you feel that you would like to report abuse or get more information about that, you can go to www.childhelp.org or call 1-800-422-4433. We are also available to chat or talk 24/7. You can reach us at 1-800-runaway or chat with us at www.1800runaway.org. We hope that these resources are helpful to you and that your situation improves. Please reach back out at anytime if we can be of any more help to you!

      Wishing you the best,
      NRS
