is it illegal/against the law to help a runaway by allowing them in your home in California?

  • #2
Hello there, thanks for reaching out.

There is a charged called "harboring a runaway" if you are a legal adult and you let a runaway stay with you. We are not legal experts but we can speak in general terms. Harboring a runaway is usually a misdemeanor offense. Typically, the youth would need to be found at an adult's house by police after being reported as a runaway. The adult needs to be fully aware that the youth is a runaway for the youth's guardian to attempt to press harboring charges.

Please do not hesitate to call or chat us if you have additional questions or if you would like to talk about the situation you are in. We are confidential and here to help.

    Best of luck,

    NRS
