  • What to do if questioned

If the police stop to question me as a runaway but assume that I'm just homeless is there a way to not have to answer questions or to just walk away freely?

    Hi,

Thanks so much for taking the time to reach out to us. If you are listed as a runaway it is part of the police's duty to bring you back to your guardian or investigate the situation if there's something going on at home. There is a chance that you may get stopped by a cop if you run away and they will try to question you, but as a youth it can be difficult to just walk away without answering any questions. The most a police officer can do if you are a runaway is get in touch with your parents and bring you back home, though. Running away is not illegal so you would not get arrested.

If you want to talk more about what you're going through please feel free to reach out to us again! You can call us at 1-800-RUNAWAY, we are 24/7 so someone will always be here to answer.
Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.
