  • Leaving the house when 17

Hello. I'm 17 and live in New York I want to leave my house and move in with a friend. My father is constantly screaming and threating me saying if my mother wasn't there he would snap my neck. Pretty crazy so I'm just trying to leave. I'm in 11th grade and have a job and my full license. I don't need help finacial. My plan is to work while living with him then once I have enough money move to Hawaii. I don't plan on finishing school.

Thank you for reaching out to National Runaway Safeline with your concerns and distressing situation. It takes a lot of courage to reach out and so we want to provide you support with your situation. We are so sorry to hear your experiencing verbal abuse by your father. You do not deserve to be treated that way by your father. We applaud you for being so responsible by having a job and a license. It sounds like you want to leave your house very soon and move into your friend's house. Have you considered inquiring first if your friend's parents are okay with you staying at their house. Although we are not legal experts, we can provide general legal information and do know in most states it is unlawful to harbor a runaway minor. So if your parents were to file a runaway report with the local police department and the police located the family you were staying with, charges could be filed against your friend's parents. That is a risk you might want to take into consideration. If you decided you wanted to leave home and stay at youth shelters, we can do a search and help find places for you to stay. Mainly we are here to listen while you talk through your options where to go, if you decide you want to leave home. Please call us at 1-800-786-2929 or chat with us so we can talk you through your options. Thank you for reaching out to us and please do not hesitate to call us as we are here 24 hours a day/7 days a week to take your call.
Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.

Thank you. What I'm going to be doing is try to just hold out for a little until I am out of school and considered an adult. I want to get away but as much as I want to leave I need to finish school or I will be screwed. I really do appreciate your response.
