  • When?

So, I HAVE to leave, I don't feel safe. I have supplies that I need to bring with me. But my parents will know what I'm doing if they see them, and that is bad. I know exactly where I'm going, and it's safe and with people I know. But when do I leave? I was thinking either at night or as soon as school ends for the day. The latter would put me further away from where I know and where I am going. But I'm not sure if night would be more dangerous. It would be hard to bring my supplies to school without suspicion, AND bring my school supplies. Which do you think would be safer? I HAVE to leave soon, and I know where to go until I can notify the proper authorities. Please respond soon. If the school is the best, I will have to wait a little while, because I'm on break, but if night would be safe, I could leave super soon.

You do not deserve to feel unsafe at home and we are glad you reached out to us. Reaching out for help and thinking through big decisions like leaving home and when to leave can be really difficult and take a lot of strength. Before you do leave, if you ever feel in immediate danger you can always call 911.

It sounds like you don’t feel safe and want to leave home as soon as possible, but are not sure when would be the safest time to leave home. We are not legal experts and while it is not illegal to runaway, if you are a minor (under 18 in most states) and are found by the police if a runaway report is filed, the people you are staying with could be charged with harboring a runaway. If you have more legal questions you can always call us at our 24/7 hotline 1-800-786-2929 or call your non-emergency police number.

In addition to where you will stay it could be helpful to think about how long you can stay there, how you will support yourself, and how you will get to and from school if you plan to stay at school. If you need help thinking through these additional questions or would like help finding resources we are available 24/7 and are always here to help. Running away is a big step and it will be helpful that you are thinking about how you can stay safe.

    Do not hesitate to call.
    Good luck,
Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.

{Original Poster} Thanks for your response, but I can't access this service in any way other than this. My question was, is leaving at night safe? I have the rest figured out, I just need to know when to go.

        Hey there,

Thanks for reaching out again. Here at NRS we are non directive, so we aren't able to tell you when you should leave home. If you plan to leave at night, you may want to consider possible consequences involved with running away at night.

        Best of luck to you,
