  • Please help

I'm sixteen years old and my parents are abusive, but when I have tried to get help they have said there isn't much they can do, and they includes CPS. Anyway, I recently learned what emancipation is, and I know I could wait until I'm 18 but I don't think I'm going to make it until then. I need to get out! But they won't let me get a job or leave the house, I'm using a computer in school to type this, I don't know what to do... I have friends that would let me live with them until I can afford to get my own place, but when I looked at the rules in my state, West Virginia, I have to be living away from my parents to get emancipated, but they won't let me leave, frankly if they find out I posted this it's not going to be good for me... But I make amazing grades and haven't got in trouble, I'm responsible and resourceful enough to get a job, and I've been taking care of myself for a very long time now. I'm really nervous which is why this is all over the place, but another requirement is having a job, which again I can't get without parental consent. I need to be emancipated becuase if I live with anyone else I'm related to by blood I'll be in the same situation, so I need to stay with one of my friends until I can rent an apartment. And I'm also broke so I can't afford a lawyer. Please respond as soon as possible, I'm sorry if I left anything out, and I'm terrified to run away because they've burned my stuff before and abuse my pets when I do things they don't like, thanks for reading.

Hello and thanks for reaching out on our forum. It sounds like you’re going through a very difficult time and we are very sorry your parents are abusive and are not letting you get a job or leave the house. Using your school’s computer was very resourceful and we’re glad you found a way to contact us despite communication limitations at home.

You mentioned what you’ve learned about emancipation in your home state of West Virginia, although it sounds as though you don’t feel it to be a viable option at this time given you are not living separate/apart from your parents and don’t have a job. We want to give you credit for trying to view your options from all sides and we’re sorry there have been some challenges figuring out an alternative option to living at home or with other family members.

If you’d like to try and file a new abuse report or explore runaway/homeless youth shelter options in your city/town, we’d be happy to help to the best of our ability. We appreciate you taking the time to explain your situation and are sorry this whole situation is so terrifying for you. Neither you nor your animals deserve to be abused in your home. We encourage you to try out our Live Chat which opens very soon at 4:30pm CST. Best of luck!
Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.
