Hi! My name is Jackie and I am a 14 year old run away. I am in Texas right now and my parents have given up on finding me...they think I am dead. They weren't nice people to me anyway and they probably don't even care. Anyway I am staying with my friend right now and it's been three days. I really wanna start school next week...is that possible for me to do?

Thank you so much for reaching out to National Runaway Safeline. It sounds like you are currently in a safe place with your friend, which is great to hear. You also mentioned that they were not nice to you, which sounds really frustrating. If you want to talk more about this, please call us at 1-800-786-2929 or 1-800-RUNAWAY to talk. We are open 24/7, and we are here to listen and help.
We are not legal experts at NRS, but we do have some experience. Because you are a minor, enrolling in school without a parent is going to be difficult. However, it is possible. You would need to get in contact with the department of education. In Texas, that number would be (512) 463-9734. You would need to call them and explain your situation, and ask if it would be possible to enroll as a runaway.
You said you think your parents have given up on finding you, but because you have only been missing for 3 days, it is possible your parents are still looking for you. They also could have put out a runaway report. This means that if someone finds out you have runaway, you could be taken home to your parents, and your friend could get in trouble. If you would like to talk more about this, please call us. If you would like to connect with your parents, and discuss the possibility of staying at your friend’s house, or going to school with her, but don’t feel comfortable doing that alone, we could conference call with them. This means that you could talk to your parent with someone else on line, so you would not have to be alone.
Again, thank you so much for reaching out to us. It takes a lot to ask for help. If you would like to talk more about your plans, get more information, or look into more resources in Austin, please call or chat us.
Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.
