  • I need help and some questions answered

Hi, if i were to run away from home (Im 16) and i moved to another state with money of my own would my parents be able to find where i live?
and would they try to get me back? because.. my father doesn't care about me, nor does my mother ( They took away my only source of income which was art) to buy supplies because my father says he won't be a "dad" to me anymore and i don't like living here, what should i do?
someone i know is trying to get custody of me (His mom is) and its taking to long for them to get a reply, and i don't want to be here any longer if i ran away to another state and left everything would that still find me or? i hope toe get a reply soon

RE: I need help and some questions answered

Thank you for reaching out to the National Runaway Safeline. It sounds like you’ve been going through a hard time, but we’re here to help you in any way we can.

That must be so hurtful to feel that your parents don’t care about you. And that sounds frustrating to have your source of income taken away from you on top of the other things you’ve been going through. It sounds like art might be a really positive hobby for you.

We’re not legal experts here at NRS. But generally, it is not illegal to run away from home. But your parents could file a runaway report, the police could get involved and bring you home, and the people you’re staying with could possibly get in legal trouble. The laws and policies in each city and state may be different. If you wanted to ask specific questions about laws and policies on running away, you could consider calling your local non-emergency police department phone number or call legal aid resources in your city and state.

There are many resources that could help you work through conflict with your family, get legal information, find a safe place if you’re in need of that, or help you with anything else you may need. If you would like more information about any of these resources or if you’d like to talk more about what’s been going on, you can call us at 1-800-RUNAWAY (1-800-786-2929) or chat with us online.

Again, thank you for contacting us. You’ve been going through a tough time, but you’ve shown strength by reaching out for help. If you ever need anything in the future, please feel free to call us or chat with us online. We’re always here to listen and here to help.
Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.
