  • Just A Few Questions..

Hey I just have a few questions I want to know the answers to. I've done the research but the "Run Away" laws are really hard to understand in Texas.

I'm 17 if I leave but leave a note to who's house I'm going to and tell them I will be back let's say a week or less.Can..

    1) I be forced back home?

    2) The parents of my friend get in any legal trouble?

    3) Can my parents force me to come back and make me not see my friend again? ( I'm a guy and so is my friend)

I don't have a abusive household and I don't plan on trying to run away forever just for a few days so I can get my thoughts straight. My parents are really nice it's just I need some time. And I want to make sure my friends parents are safe as am I. The Texas law is so confusing. I would just like some help and knowledge of the law.

    RE: Just A Few Question..

    Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to us. IT seems like you are in a difficult and confusing situation. We aren't legal experts but we can speak generally. There is no length of time that needs to pass in order to make a runaway report, so your guardian could file a report. If this happened you could be returned home. Your friends parents could be charged with harboring a runaway, which the penalties for vary from state to state and county to county. It may be beneficial to contact your local law enforcement and ask how they would pursue a runaway report of a 17 year old and what their policy is for harboring a runaway.

Have you thought about having this conversation of a brief period of space to get your mind straight, with your parents? You can always contact us directly at 1-800-RUNAWAY. We look forward to hearing from you. Good luck.
