I'm currently 17. I turn 18 in two months. I was taken by the state a few months ago and I was placed in a temporary home for the time being until things are settled with my father but I don't see that happening. My question is what will happen if I left the house I was placed in when I turn 18? Would I have to leave the state? Would I be in any legal trouble? I live in Nebraska where the age of majority is 19.

Re: help needed asap
Hello –
Thank you for reaching out with your questions and concerns. It sounds like you are in a tough spot right now and trying to figure out your next steps. You mentioned that you are currently 17 but plan on leaving your placement once you turn 18. It sounds like your main concern is that the age of majority in Nebraska is 19 and what would happen if you left before then. In most states once a youth turns 18 there is not usually a lot the police will do in regards to making a report or making a youth return home. It’s difficult for us to give specific legal information like this because we are not affiliated with the police and we don’t take reports, so we can’t always say how each department will handle every situation. The other thing that may be a factor is the fact that you are in state custody. Have you spoken with anyone, possibly a caseworker, about your options once you turn 18? It may be helpful to reach out to your local police on a non-emergency line and just ask a few questions on whether they would even take a report or make a youth return home after they turn 18.
Keep in mind that you can also reach out to us directly if you would like to discuss this situation more in depth. Our services are confidential and anonymous and we would be happy to provide some extra support and discuss safe options and resources if needed. While we can’t make this decision for you we would be happy to talk through a safe plan with you. There is always someone here to listen and here to help. Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.
