  • I need help

I'm currently 17. I turn 18 in two months. I was taken by the state a few months ago and I was placed in a temporary home for the time being until things are settled with my father but I don't see that happening. My question is what will happen if I left the house I was placed in when I turn 18? Would I have to leave the state? Would I be in any legal trouble? I live in Nebraska

    RE: I need help

    Hello,

Thanks for reaching out to us for help. It sounds like you are in a really tough situation right now. You should know that 18 is the age of majority. This means that in two months you will be considered a legal adult and have a right to make your own decisions about where you live. Usually youth age out of the state system when they turn 18, but sometimes can receive services after they turn 18. However, if this is the case, you would not be in trouble and you should not have to leave the state. If you have a case worker or social worker, they might be able to tell you more about what could happen. Do you have a safe place to go in two months? If you want to talk about your plans or you need anything else, we are here to listen and help 24/7. We are looking forward to talking to you soon, and wish you the best of luck.

In Nebraska the age of majority is 19. Does that change anything?

If you have contacted NRS today through another means (for example, live chat, email or bulletin) for the same issue, it would be helpful to let us know that you have already contacted us. NRS understands it takes courage to reach out for help; therefore, we would like to minimize the need for you to repeat your situation and avoid offering you duplicate services.
