Re: can i move without an adult
Hi there,
Thanks for reaching out to the National Runaway Safeline. It sounds like you have a good relationship with your cousin and are thinking about a plan for your future. We are glad you contacted us to assist you in coming up with a plan.
You were asking about moving to Mississippi after graduation. We are not legal experts, but we can give you some general information. Legally, you are not an adult until you turn 18; that means your mom is your legal guardian until you are 18. It sounds like your mom might give you permission to move, in which case you wouldn’t be a runaway. However, it might be helpful to have a temporary guardian in Mississippi until you turn 18, so you would have someone to help you get settled. Since your mom is your legal guardian, if you leave her care, she could file a runaway report unless you legally seek emancipation or a temporary guardian in Mississippi.
We can help you find a legal resource for your area in Michigan or for where you would be staying in Mississippi. You can give us a call at 1-800-RUNAWAY 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We are glad you reached out and are happy to assist you further.
Good luck and stay safe,
NRSPlease remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.
