  • Running Away

hello, i recently decided to run away at the age of 17 (after i graduate with a g.e.d. ) i plan to move from California to North Dakota where my girlfriend and her father live. i plan on getting a job and saving money into a savings account in order to purchase a car and an apartment. i would be living with my girlfriend until we have enough money to purchase an apartment together; furthermore, she would be working for her father (a steady well paying job) and i would have to find another job when i don't have a car . Her dad said he would give me a job but i just need advice. i live in California and will taking a greyhound. the cost of the greyhound is 109$ which i have already saved for and now im ready to go just looking for some help.

    Re: Running Away

    Hi there,

Thank you for contacting us here at the National Runaway Safeline. It sounds like you have been making some plans but would like some help getting going through your options and we are here to assist you the best we can.

So you said that you are planning on going to live with your girlfriend and her father in North Dakota. It sounds like they offer you a lot of support and that is really good to hear. Is there something specific happening at home that is making you want to leave? We do not tell people what to do here, because you know your situation better than we do. We just want to make sure that you are safe in whatever decision you make. Have you thought about where you would go if, at some point in the future, things did not go well with your girlfriend and her dad? Do you think you would be able to go back home, or is there someone else that you would be able to stay with in North Dakota? We want to let you know if you ever are in need of a place to stay, you can call us any time at 1800runaway and we can try to find a shelter local to you.

It sounds like you have made plans about getting out to North Dakota and what you would do once you got there. It sounds like you would like to graduate and get your GED first which is good to hear. It sounds like you might be able to work for your girlfriend’s dad if you cannot find a job right away, which is also a really good thing to have as a backup plan as far as income.

We want to let you that we are here 24/7, anonymous and confidential at 1800runaway. If you would like to discuss your situation further, talk through more possible options or need any specific resources you can call us anytime. We also have a chat option available from the hours of 4:30pm to 11:30pm CST through our website at 1800runaway.org.

    Good luck and stay safe,
