I'm 17 years old. I live with my grandparents, they have custody of me. They no longer want me to live with them and I no longer want to live there. They're verbally abusive. I'm constantly being kicked out, accused of things. I'm sick of it. I'm a senior in high school and I have a job. I'm not going to be 18 until June, but I can't live like this anymore. Im completely miserable. My boyfriend lives with his mother and he's 18 with a job and he graduated high school. What are the chances I could live with them?

Re: Stuck
Hi there,
Thank you for contacting us here at National Runaway Safeline. It sounds like you have been going through a lot and we are here to help you out the best that we can.
So you said that you are 17, and you do not want to live with your grandparents anymore who have custody of you. You said that they are verbally abusive, which is not something anyone deserves. You deserve to feel safe and accepted in your own home. It sounds like you have a great support system from your boyfriend and his family, which is good to hear especially with everything going on in your own home. It sounds like you want to stay with your boyfriend and his family. Have you thought about possible back up plans if anything were to happen while staying with your boyfriend and his mom?
It sounds like your grandparents do not want you to be living at home anymore, and you do not want to stay there either. If your grandparents are okay with you living elsewhere, and you have a safe alternative place to stay, it would not be considered running away because you have their consent. With that being said, if your guardians decided down the line that they wanted you to return home to them, generally speaking it is fairly easy to call the local police department and report a youth as a runaway.
We are glad that you have reached out to us to try and find out more information regarding your options. If you would like to discuss your situation further, would like specific resources or simply just want to talk, you can reach us anytime. Our hotline at 1800runaway is available 24/7, and it is anonymous and confidential. We also have a chat option available through our website at 4:30pm to 11:30pm CST at 1800runaway.org.
Good luck and stay safe,
