    RE: Abuse

    Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to the National Runaway Safeline and sharing with us some of your story. It sounds like home is not safe for you and you are trying to put together a plan. We think that is it great that you are trying to put together a plan because running away can be a big step.

You mentioned that there is abuse going on in your home. You do not deserve to be in a place where you are not loved and supported for you. Filing an abuse report with Child Protective Services is an option you have. You can either look up online what the number for your state would be, or you can always call us on our hotline at 1800.786.2929 and we can call and make the abuse report with you.

You had mentioned that you are wanting to run away and are thinking about going to a friend’s house, but are worried about what might happen if you do. To start off with, running away is not illegal, it is a status offense. This means that if you were to run away and your legal guardian was to file a runaway report, and the police were to find you that you would be brought back home to your legal guardians. If the police or your father know where you are and who you are staying with, then it is possible that your friend, or the person you are staying with, would be charged with harboring a runaway.

We hoped that his helped and if you wish to discuss your situation in greater detail we encourage you to call us on our 24/7 hotline 1800.786.2929 or chat with us every day from 4:30pm-11:30pm CST. We hope this helped and looking forward to hearing from you.
