    17 yr old girl
    15 yr old boy

    Left state together.

Can 17 yr old be charged with "transporting a minor" if no sex or abortion was involved?

Would this just be a status offense?

    Re: legal question

Thanks so much for writing in. It sounds like your dealing with a pretty difficult situation, and a lot of your questions deal with legal issues that we may not be able to specifically answer. It sounds like the biggest issue here is that you want to make sure that a 17 yr old will not be charged if both of you are discovered by the police. Laws can be different from state to state so depending on where you are leaving from could make a difference. In most states the age of majority, when you are considered a legal adult, is 18. But at 17 you could very well be charged with something like transporting a minor, especially if you are planning on going out of state (or already have gone out of state). If police picked you up they may decide that both of you are underage and would decide that both of you are just runaways and most likely send you back home, but it is a distinct possibility that the person doing the transporting would be charged with something else as well, especially if you're crossing state lines. If you want to write in and let us know what state you have left from we may be able to look up some more specific information, or we may be able to find specific legal resources in your area that would be able to give you some more information. Also if you wanted to give us a call at 1-800-RUNAWAY we would be happy to try and answer any questions you may have.
