  • I'm 18 and I want to move out but...

Okay, so I'm 18, a legal adult in Missouri, but I'm still in high school. I would like to know if I can transfer to another school easily without my parents permission and if I can just leave without telling my parents. My parents aren't exactly nice and if I told them flat out they'd flip out, possibly taking all my stuff away. I've really thought about it and I need to leave. They put me down all the time and scream at my siblings and I everyday. I am done. Please help me understand.

    Hello –

Thanks for reaching out with your questions and sharing a bit about your situation. You mentioned that you are 18 and would like to switch schools but are not sure if that is something you can do without your parent’s permission. It sounds like there is a lot going on at home and you are sick of dealing with your parents and their yelling. We are sorry to hear you are going through all of this. You are right. In most states age of majority is 18 so it may be likely that you can enroll yourself in another school without parent consent. Now this may be dependent on each school’s enrollment process so the best option may be to contact the school you would like to enroll in and see if enrolling at 18 without a parent’s consent is an option. They would probably be able to help you best with that process. Even if you didn’t want to get into the whole situation you could just say that your parents/guardians are not involved with you anymore and you live on your own.
