Re: texting a person you know has runaway

Thanks for reaching out with your questions and concerns. It sounds like you have been in contact with a person you know has runaway and trying to figure out how to help. You mentioned that mom asked you about trying to help get him home but it seems he does not want to go back. Is mom aware that you have been in contact with him? We can’t really give you specifics on the laws but it really sounds like you are just trying to help with the situation. If the police are asking if you have been in contact and you are not being truthful with them that could potentially be a problem. Obviously in the end he is going to have to make the decision to come home on his own. It may be good to let him know about the court date if he doesn’t already know because that could cause some issues for him as well.

This sounds like a tricky situation and it’s understandable you are concerned about all of this. If you would like to discuss your situation more in depth you can always call us at our 24 hour hotline 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929). We also have a live chat available from 4:30p to 11:30p CST. We look forward to hearing from you. Also, one option might be giving him our number (1-800-RUNAWAY). We would be able to talk with him to make sure that he's safe and to talk through his options.

        Good luck with everything,

        NRS
