re: I am 17 almost 18 in 6 months in January 2014
Hi:
Thanks for contacting the National Runaway Safeline. It sounds like you would like to know if you can legally move out before you turn 18. In most states, 18 is the age of majority which is also usually the age that minors can legally move out at. However in a few states (even in some specific counties and cities), minors can legally move out at 17. In order to determine if you can legally move out at 17, you may need to contact a legal aid organization or your local nonemergency police hotline. Remember if you decided to move out at 17 and 18 is the age of majority in your state, there is a possibility you can get filed as a runaway.
It sounds like it's pretty frustrating to be so close to your 18th birthday but not in complete control of where you can legally live. It sounds like you haven't discussed moving out with your mom yet; out of fear, she'll get mad. How are things going at home and can you remain there until 18?
We hope that your safety isn't a concern at home. We would like for you know that if you ever want to discuss your options or seek out additional information, we are always here. Our hotline can be reached by dialing 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929). Our hotline is toll-free, anonymous, confidential, and available 24/7. We can also be reached via live CHAT between 4:30pm and 11:30pm CST.
Best Wishes
