I recently left my house because my parents are homophobic and refuse to accept me for who I am. I am almost 19 years old and last year they purchased a car for me and my father has it under both of our names. I live in California and I am just wondering if my dad can take away my car or file a police report?

Re: Car Issues
Hello there,
First, we are really sorry to hear about your situation. You have the right to be who you are and it’s got to be really gut-wrenching to have your parents refuse to accept you for who you are. Even if they still love you, it’s got to hurt to have them not fully support you or understand you – at least not yet. Maybe they will come to accept you fully in time? We hope so. A great number to call if you ever need some support is the GLBT National Hotline: 1-888-843-4564. Of course, you can always give us a call at 1-8-00-RUNAWAY. We are here 24/7 and are totally confidential and anonymous. We’d like to help in whatever way we can.
You asked if your dad could take your car away from you if he purchased it and the title is under his name and yours. He might be able to, but we honestly are not sure. We can’t offer legal advice. You may want to contact your local Department of Motor Vehicles to figure that one out. We aren’t sure what you mean by filing a police report on you, though. Do you want to give us a call to clarify what you mean by that? If you are almost 19 you are considered a legal adult, of course. So you do have the right to leave your house and chart your own course in life.
Of course, you can always use our Live Chat feature too. That’s available from 4:30pm-11:30pm Central time. It’s the red button on the main page of our website.
We hope to hear from you on the phone or in chat. Good luck! Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.
