  • What can I do?!!?!?

Hi I'm just wondering if there is anyway I can get taken away from my parents or be sent somewhere for the better. I'm 16 and I have a younger sister who's 14. Ever since we were younger my mom has been an alcoholic and so has my dad. When I was younger my mom would drink so much to the point where she would pass out and sleep for days and even have seizures because of dehydration and low sodium. My sister and I would go to school with dirty uniforms and unbrushed hair. My dad used to get so angry to the point where he would beat her and push her down the stairs. She still gets drunk and sleeps and being a teenager it affects me and my sister majorly. I have developed an eating disorder and I'm very depressed. My father still gets angry at my mom and yells not just at her but all of us. I feel abandoned and alone and I just want a mom who won't drink and who will be a mom to me and my sister. What can I do? Where can I go? Someone please help.

    RE: What can I do?!!?!?

    Hello,

Thanks for contacting us. I am so sorry to hear how difficult things have been in your household for both you and your sister. It sounds like you are both living in an unhealthy and potentially unsafe environment and I want to commend you for reaching out for help. That takes a lot of courage. You mentioned that both your parents are drinking excessively and you are not completely being taken care of and your parents' relationship is physically abusive. Have you ever considered filing an abuse report? These can be your voice for communicating with the proper authorities about what has been going on at home. If you would like to file an abuse report, please call us 24/7 at 1-800-RUNAWAY . We can simply talk about it together and you can make a decision with which you are comfortable. You do not have to do anything you don't want to.

You and your sister deserve a safe and healthy home and it sounds like alcohol is playing a large role in keeping that right from you. Alcoholism is a destructive and often confusing disease that affects a lot of families and relationships in a very negative way. If you would like to learn more about alcoholism and coping with an alcoholic parent, visit http://teenshealth.org/teen/your_min...alcoholic.html. Hopefully, you can find the information on that website helpful.

Again, please call us if you would like some additional support and/or you'd like to discuss abuse reporting. We are confidential and anonymous, which means everything we talk about stays between us and we won't ask you for any identifying information, unless you wanted to go forward with an abuse report. Aside from calling us 24/7 at 1-800-RUNAWAY or chat with us at www.1800runaway.org during the hours of 4:30pm-11:30pm. You are very brave for reaching out to us for help and we encourage you to continue to advocate for yourself and your sister. Your safety and well-being are what's most important. Good luck.

    Sincerely,

    NRS
Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.
