Moving out at 19....no parental consent needed? Escaping home
Hello there,
We're glad you decided to reach out to us at the National Runaway Safeline. It sounds like you've had multiple caregivers growing up and were also involved in foster care. We are sorry to hear that you were returned to your mother who was also your abuser.
It sounds like you've been able to excel academically which is great. Congratulations on studying pre-med! We are not legal experts here; however, sometimes you would still need parental involvement in terms of financial aid for school. Here is a legal aid resource if you need a more direct answer:
Servicios Legales de Puerto Rico Inc
Most states recognize the legal age of adulthood as 18, but as non-legal experts we cannot say for certain. Hopefully this gives you a start and you are welcome to reach out to us either through our Live Chat (red button at http://www.1800runaway.org open every day from 4:30 to 11:30pm CST) or by calling 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929.) Best of luck!

Moving out at 19....no parental consent needed? Escaping home
I'm 19 and I want to escape my home. I used to be under the custodial care of my father when the Child Services removed me 2 years ago, but then I was returned to my abuser, my mother.
I'm currently studying pre-med in my local university. I need to move out for my welfare but my dad is opposed ( I need some financial help from him), claiming I need permission from my custodial parent, my mother.
I live in Puerto Rico. Am I still a minor until 21?Tags: None
