I'm 14 years old, male and have had multiple attempts on my life. as of late have been thinking simply leaving the situation wpuld be a better decision than taking my life ( i do have bipolar disorder but my head is clear at the moment) Now, a friend has offered me. food and shelter in exchange for simple work for his father. Problem is he lives in california and i live in vancouver. Would crossing the border as a runaway be at all possible? and would there be anyway to complete my highschool diploma once i had arrived at my destination.? thank you

Thanks for contacting the National Runaway Safeline. It sounds like you have experienced some challenges in life. It seems that you would like to leave for California to stay with a friend. Do you reside in Vancouver, WA or Vancouver, BC? If you do reside in Canada, it may be difficult to cross into the United States without the proper identification especially without a parent or legal guardian. As far as school is concerned; usually a parent or legal guardian is needed to enroll you into school. It sounds like you have been diagnosed with a bipolar disorder. Are you currently treatment? If so, have you thought about what type of treatment options will be available to you once you left home. Determining if running away is the best decision can be difficult. Have you thought about any alternatives aside from running away? We are not here to tell you whether or not you should stay or go. However we do like to do reality checking along the way. And most importantly we like to discuss safety with youth regardless if they decide to stay at home or leave.
