  • 15 female, plannig to run away

Okay ive been very depressed lately and even had suicidal thoughts, my mother is abusive and im failing school again this year. Im afraid for her to see my grades and hit me again, so i want to leave before it happens. I have a brother and two sisters, one of which is only 5 years old, so i dont want to report her since they would just split them up in foster care. Well, i know that running away isnt a smart option but i feel like its the only option i have left. Although i dont have any friends i could stay with, and no family members I could stay with either.
Ive thought about the shelters but ive heard theyre horrible around here and also that they contact your parents. Well i dont want my mom to know where i will be because well thats the point of running away.
And the emancipation thing wouldnt work because i dont want my mother to know about any of this. So i really dont know what i should do any more and i just need a break.

RE: 15 female, planning to run away

    Hello there,

Thanks for reaching out to us during this difficult time. We are sorry to hear what you are going through, nobody deserves to be abused. Have you ever considered reporting it? Here at the National Runaway Safeline, we are mandated reporters. This means that if you felt comfortable giving us that information we are required by law to report it to the police. Your teachers and counselors are also mandated reporters. You mentioned that you were worried about splitting the family up into foster care, which is a legitimate concern. You can always contact Child Protective Services anonymously and ask them what thier protocol is for your type of situation.

You do have the right to feel safe in your own home. Although shelters do typically require parental contact, they may talk to you if there is abuse or neglect in the home. Here is a website for all the safe place shelters in the US You also mentioned that you have been feeling suicidal lately. Have you talked to anyone about these thoughts? The National Suicide Hotline at 1-800-273-TALK is a good resource for you to reach out to. They are available 24/7 and can talk to you about feelings of depression.

You mentioned too that you have been looking into emancipation. Emancipation does often take time and money. Although you have already thought about several of your options, there may be more options to explore you maybe haven't thought of yet. We would like to help you come up with a plan. If you feel comfortable talking to us, we can be reached at any time at 1-800-RUNAWAY or by live chat at from 4:30pm-11:30pm Central Standard Time. We look forward to hearing from you and wish you the best of luck.
