  • Ready to leave when I turn 17

I'm through with my family. They stole my hard earned savings, expect the world of one person, and my mom is just crazy, selfcentered, and so many things are wrong I can't even type it all up. To keep it simple, I hate my family. How do I leave at 17, because I might just hit the bottom sopn

We're really sorry you feel you've been treated fairly by your mom. It sounds like there's been a lot going on between you and your mom at home and you're looking to leave. It is important to note that it is not against the law to run away, but there can be legal action taken against anyone you are staying with that is over the age of 18, if your mom was to file a runaway report.

Running away from home can be challenging and dangerous. We encourage you to consider making a plan for how you will support and feed yourself, how you will obtain transportation, and where might you go to stay. This can be a scary decision to make and we want you to be as safe as possible, no matter what decisions you make.

You also mentioned that you might hit bottom soon. If you are struggling with depression, or even suicidal thoughts, you can contact the National Suicide Hotline 24 hours a day at 1-800-273-8255. Also, you can explore your options to reach out to someone that you can talk about how you've been feeling, such as a teacher, school counselor, or a mental health professional outside of school. These can be very helpful support systems, especially when people currently in a difficult situation.
We commend you for reaching out to us tonight. If you would like to discuss your situation further and possibly access further resources, such as a shelter, you can call us 24/7 at 1-800-RUNAWAY, or chat with us at during the hours of 4:30-11:30. We wish you the best of luck.

Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.
