  • Turning 17 in a Month, Can I leave home?

I will be 18 in one month *June* And would like to leave home within 5 days of this post.

Since I am ''pretty much'' an adult, I don't assume that runaway laws or labeling will apply to me?

I am crossing state lines, Not a delinquint or having any kind of substance abuse. Leaving an abusive home where I have no potential is what I am doing.

I have money, a plan, and a place to lay my head at night.

I'm crossing from California into Nevada.

    Hello,

Thanks for reaching out to NRS today, we are here to help the best we can. It sounds like you have been having a difficult time but that you have established a plan as to what you will be doing and where you will be staying. We do not give advice here; we just try to explore all of your options with you. Our first and major concern is always safety. We would like to provide you a resource in case you were to ever run into any issues regarding shelter, nationalsafeplace.org.
You said that you will be 18 soon but that you are leaving before you actually turn 18. We are not legal experts here, but most often the legal age of an adult is 18. Sometimes, different states vary in the way that they treat runaway youth. It’s possible that if a legal guardian were to make a runaway report, the police would look for you but with you being so close to 18, they may not. Every situation is different and we cannot make any guarantees.
You mentioned abuse at home. Does anyone else live at home? If you were ever interested in having an abuse report made on behalf of yourself or anyone else at home, you are always welcome to call into our hotline, we are available 24/7 at 1800 RUNAWAY (786-2929).

We wish you luck with everything,
    NRS
Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.
