    Re: Leaving Home

    Hello,

Thanks for reaching out to us. It sounds like you're trying to figure out your options and rights. While we're not legal advisors we can suggest certain laws that we're familiar with and then recommend that you follow up with specific agencies to assist you.

We're sorry to hear that you need to leave home and that you're finding it difficult to do that. What's important to understand for your situation is the age of majority. As far as we know, the age of majority in Kentucky is 18. If a youth leaves home without permission from guardian, there's a chance that the guardian can file a runaway report with the police even though you're within a month of turning 18. Some police departments might not doing anything but most will uphold the age of majority law.

With regards to your clothes, that'd probably have to be something you'd have to arrange with your mom/owner of the home.
Do you think there would be an issue with getting those things even after you turned 18?

We'd like to continue to explore your situation and advocate for you. Please call us at 1800-RUNAWAY (786-2929). We're anonymous, confidential and available 24/7. We're here to listen, here to help.

    Best,
    NRS

Re: Would I go to jail for leaving?

        Hello,

We are not legal experts; however, we do have a general understanding of what may happen in runaway situations. Most runaway youth (especially those not on probation) do not end up in jail. Sometimes when they are picked up by police, they are detained temporarily. Police do not usually keep runaways though unless they have committed another crime. Hopefully that makes sense. If you would like to talk more, come Live Chat with us at http://www.1800runaway.org. Live Chat is open every day from 4:30-11:30pm CST.

        Good luck, NRS
