  • 19 year old, just want to be free

Hello, im a 19 year old female that just want to be free. I live with an amazing family with no problem of abuse or such thing don't get me wrong, but....i feel like I'm living my life for someone else, not for myself. My parents have an image of me they want me to be...and I'm not with. I tell them I want to be such and such, but with their innocent and kind personality, they were able to change my mind. As I said, they are amazing people, thats why I want to leave...so they don't have to witness me going out my way without them knowing. I applied to Universities in New York and I have a lot of job skills to get a proper job there too. All I'm asking for is for your help. I live in Toronto Ontario and I want to move somewhere in New York so they won't know. I have the money to go over there and stay in a hotel for a night or two...I just need y'all help. I never made a bold move like this before and i know it's the right thing for me. I'm scared, nerves and ready to do what it takes to make this plan happen. Please, please, please help me.

RE: 19 year old, just want to be free

    Hello,

Thank you for writing into the National Runaway Safeline bulletin board, we are always here to help and here to listen to you and your needs. After reading about your situation it sounds like living with your parents is pretty difficult for you and you do not have a lot of freedom to be the way that you want to be. That must be really frustrating for you to have to live up to a certain image.

From what you have told us about your plan, it sounds like you have thought about leaving to New York quite a lot. You stated that you have applied to a number of universities in New York, as well as, acquire a hotel number for two days. What do you think your overall plan will be after those two days in the hotel (i.e. housing, transposition, financial stability, education etc)? If you were to go through with your plan of crossing over to New York, what kinds of things do you think that your parents will do when they find out when you’re gone?

Moving to a different county to live on your own is a big step it sounds like for you. You mentioned that you’re feeling a little scared and nervous about it. What do you think is making you feel that way?

Thank you again for writing into the NRS bulletin board. You can always feel free to call us on our hotline that is 24hours (1.800.RUNAWAY) and we can connect you to some resources that we might have on hand or come up with a brainstorming ideals to better assist you. Another service that we offer here at the NRS is our chat room which is offered from 4:30pm to 11:30pm/CST (www.1800RUNAWAY.org).

Look forward to talking with you and best of luck.
Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.
