  • what education is a better option.

I'm 16 years old and ready to runaway sure during III he summer. But I still want to attend school. How do I do it? What papers will be needed? Do I need a grown up with me? Even better can i attend school online with no problem? Or, is it easier to get my GED; how will that work? What do i need to go get the test? The person I will me staying with is a good friend helping me out. She knows all the bad things that have been wrong. I really need help, I have so many questions. I need answers. Thanks.

Re: what education is a better option.

    Hey,

Thanks for reaching out to us. It sounds like you’re going through an intense time and seeking support. We’ll try and help with your questions as much as we can.

We are sorry to hear that your situation at home isn’t good at this time. You mentioned that your friend know about all the stuff you’ve been through. Is there anyone else that knows your story? Possibly a teacher or counselor at school? Can anyone there be of some help?

We are not legal experts and don’t know a lot about what would happen at school if you decided to run from home. The main thing to think about when leaving home without permission is ‘will there be a runaway report filed on me?”

When a minor leaves home, their parents can file a runaway report and that can sometimes make things difficult at school. If you think your parents will contact the school if/when you leave home, that might pose a problem for you. You’re not breaking the law by going to school as a runaway but if you have a runaway report, you will probably have to deal with that issue before continuing school.

We don’t know what you’d need to continue GED or online school programs. What we do know is that if you’re 16 and thinking about leaving home, your folks have the option of making a runaway report.

We’d like to explore more options with you to talk about what resources and rights are available to you. Please call us at 1800-RUNAWAY (786-2929). We’re anonymous, confidential and available 24/7. We’re here to listen, here to help.
Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.

      education

I ran away before and my parents filled a missing persons Report. I came home after a while. The cops said if they filed another.missing child report that CPS will take my sisters and give them to.my family. Which is way better for them! But what will they do about me? Is there any way to find out about the paper work I need to attend public school, or to get my GED, or online classes?

        Re: education

        Hello there,

It sounds like you've already run away and been filed as missing. At this point it seems like you are most concerned about school. If you qualify as a homeless student, there is support out there. http://center.serve.org/nche/states/state_resources.php directs you to your state resource and from there they can direct you to your local school district's contact. As far as CPS taking your sisters away, that would be up to them. We are here though to offer you support and continue talking about options. Please feel free to contact us directly either by calling us 24/7 at 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat (http://www.1800runaway.org) which is open every day from 4:30 to 11:30pm CST. Good luck!

            Hello again,

How long it would take to qualify as a homeless student is a great question. The homeless education liaison at your school could probably give you a better answer on that. If you have any more questions, please chat with us now until 11:30pm CST. Click on the red Live Chat button at http://www.1800runaway.org. If you have trouble getting through, please call us at 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929.) Good luck!
